Being a successful real estate investor will require you to be mentally strong and disciplined. From having the discipline to educate yourself, to save, to overcome your doubt and pull the trigger on the first property, to deal with adversity, to get past discouragement from people that don’t support you… it will all take mental strength. But the extraordinary is possible if you push forward.
CONTROL YOUR MIND – CONTROL YOUR DESTINY
You will find that anyone who has achieved success has control of their mind. Without this control, success is not possible. It is what makes some people appear to be “lucky” while others fail (or never start), even when they are of equal ability. The difference lies in the ability of some to control of their thoughts.
If you fail to control your own mind, you can be sure you won’t control anything else.
Everything begins with a thought. You must actively manage all your thoughts if you want to be successful. A single negative thought that is left unchecked will spread like a virus through your life.
Here’s an example of how this pans out: the stories of Bob and Joe. Bob and Joe both live paycheck to paycheck. They live in the same area, making the same amount of money, and are equally intelligent.
Bob hears about average people achieving financial freedom through real estate investing. Bob’s first thought is that he doesn’t believe the stories are true. He also thinks that even if they are true, he doesn’t believe that he can do it because he doesn’t have any extra money.
So what does Bob do? Nothing.
Where is Bob at in ten years? Working the same job, living paycheck to paycheck, and complaining about his lot in life. Bob is bitter. Still coming up with all sorts of reasons why he hasn’t been successful.
Joe hears about average people achieving financial freedom through real estate investing. Joe’s first thought is that he doesn’t believe the stories are true. He also thinks that even if they are true, he doesn’t believe that he can do it because he doesn’t have any extra money.
BUT, Joe is mentally disciplined enough to recognize his negative thoughts and decides to challenge them.
So what does Joe do? Joe sets out to discover for himself if there is any truth to the stories of average people like himself achieving financial freedom though real estate investing. Joe researches and researches. He starts to find more and more stories of people that have really done it. Joe starts to realize he really can do this, too! Now instead of doubt, Joe feels confidence. He pours through resources to learn all he can about investing and finds his path. Joe learns how to budget and save for his first property. He uses the shortcut to purchasing his first property and is on his way.
Where is Joe in ten years? Joe is living the good life. He achieved his goal of financial freedom and does what he wants, when he wants. He’s happy and gets to spend time with his family and doing the things he loves.
THE POWER OF MANAGED THINKING
Bob and Joe both started with the exact same thoughts of disbelief and doubt.
Bob let his negative thoughts go unchecked and his mindset took over his life. His belief that he couldn’t do it became true, just not for the reasons he thought. Bob couldn’t do it, and will never do it, because he doesn’t have mental discipline. He’ll believe Joe had some special circumstances that led to his success or that Joe was lucky.
But, the difference is Joe actively managed his thinking. He took his negative thoughts and dissected them. He took a step back and searched for the truth. After finding the truth, his thoughts of disbelief were replaced with belief. Ten years later, he’s living the good life and is financially free. Because of managing his thinking, Joe achieved his goals.
Managed thinking does not mean that the thought of doubt is wrong. It just means that you have to properly identify the doubt and dissect why you feel that way. I actually hope that you doubt every single thing I say. Why? Because it should lead you to take the time to dig in and research to find the truth for yourself. If you are mentally disciplined enough to do so, you will become an even better and more knowledgeable investor than I am.
Decide Wether You Will be a Bob or a Joe
This is your choice: Will you rule your thoughts? Or will you let your thoughts rule you?
